Hello there!
My name is Malaika, and I’m a primary school teacher. I’m also a crochet doll designer (but only in my spare time!). My creations are the culmination of the endless egging-on by my husband David, who always pushes me for more.
Everyone who knows me, knows that my hands are my life. I use them to do fun things like cooking, cleaning and corrections /sarcasm. For years though, another ‘c’ lay forgotten, as I dabbled in many forms of creativity – graphic design, portraiture and even some caricaturing.
One fine day, a DIY crochet headband piqued my fancy and the schooldays crochet hook was hurriedly fished out of its almost-final resting place, along with some almost-ancient yarn. And then it all came flooding back. I remembered the almost-forgotten art of crochet.
Some basic stitches and many headbands/beanies later, I came across some amigurumi designs. I wish I could say they stole my heart and that I started making cute mini softies straight away.
Well, not quite. My hands didn’t cooperate so well in the beginning and the initial toys I made now look a little scary to me. Then, when I was midway through my learning curve, I made this mini bear for my then boyfriend David, who immediately started making business plans for this hobby. Now here we are, married, and making toys (not babies) together.
